The New York Academy of Medicine (1216 Fifth Ave.) is hosting a free film series on "Doctors in the Movies" this winter.
The next film in the series, "The Girl in White" (to be shown on Jan. 11), is based on the life of Dr. Emily Dunning Barringer, a 1901 graduate of Cornell University Medical College, who became New York City's first woman ambulance surgeon.
Each film begins at 5:45 p.m. (refreshments served from 5:30). Admission is free, but advance registration is recommended by calling (212) 822-7273 or e-mailing history@nyam.org.
Dr. Peter E. Dans, of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and author of "Doctors in the Movies: Boil the Water and Just Say 'Ahh,'" will introduce each film and moderate a discussion after the film.
The remaining films in the series are:
Jan. 11: "The Girl in White" (1952) starring June Allyson as a woman doctor (see above).
Feb. 8: "The Last Angry Man" (1952) starring Paul Muni as an aging but dedicated doctor who loses his health caring for the new residents of his old Brooklyn neighborhood. The cast also includes Billy Dee Williams and Cicely Tyson.
March 8: "The Hospital" (1971) stars George C. Scott as a maverick chief of service in a chaotic city hospital afflicted by strikes, shortages, greed and incompetence.
