Residents Honored at Annual Banquet
The Internal Medicine Residency Program celebrated the 2012 class of graduating residents at its annual banquet June 7. Dr. Lia Logio, vice chair for education and residency director, announced several awards for faculty and housestaff. Honored at the event were Dr. James Horowitz, outgoing chief resident, and Dr. Laura Fanucchi, outgoing quality improvement chief resident.
A highlight of the evening was the special recognition of the faculty. The Housestaff selected a number of faculty members to be recipients of Teaching Awards. Dr. Logio noted that "these individuals deserve the accolades for their very visible and valuable contribution to the residency program."

A new NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-sponsored award was given to outgoing chief resident, Dr. James Horowitz, who demonstrated a collaborative patient-centered approach to patient care on the Weill Cornell campus. This award will be given to any chief from any department who demonstrates these shared values going forward. The winner receives $1,000.

Dr. Logio noted that the contributions of residents, fellows, and faculty made for a very successful year for education in the Department, and thanked all for their generous gift of time and talent in teaching during 2011-2012.
Additional Awards and Honors
Dr. Marguerite Lederberg, professor of clinical psychiatry, received the International Psycho-Oncology Society's 2012 Noemi Fisman Award for Lifetime Clinical Excellence, which honors a society member or psycho-oncology community member four outstanding clinical contributions to the field of psych-oncology.
Dr. Cathleen London, assistant professor of medicine, was appointed to the New York State Academy of Family Physicians' Advocacy Commission in May. The New York Academy is the state chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, which promotes family practice among medical students and works to enhance and improve the quality and stature of family medicine.
Dr. Vikash Modi, the Anne Belcher, M.D. Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology and assistant professor of otolaryngology in pediatrics, received the Malcolm Shvey Clinical Teaching Award that is awarded annually to an attending-physician by the residents from the combined Cornell/Columbia Otolaryngology residency program. The award was given at the resident's graduation reception June 14.
Dr. Anita Patel, a resident, received in June the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital C.A.R.E. Award, established to honor and recognize employees exhibiting outstanding work performance.
Asif Rizwan, a student in the Physiology, Biophysics and Systems Biology Graduate Program working in Dr. Jason Koutcher's lab, received the "Magna Cum Laude Merit Award" at the 20th Annual International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine conference May 10 for his poster on "Assessment of lactate in LDH-A silenced 4T1 tumors with selective multiple-quantum coherence transfer."
Dr. Jo Anne Sirey, associate professor of psychology in clinical psychiatry, and Dr. Patrick Raue, associate professor of psychology in psychiatry, participated in the 2012 National Institutes of Health Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health, hosted July 9-13. The training institute is an NIH-wide initiative sponsored by the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research in the Office of the Director at the National Institutes of Health about how to practice the best evidence-based strategies to treat many conditions.
Dr. Miklos Toth, professor of pharmacology, was invited to speak at the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child's spring meeting hosted in San Francisco, Calif. June 18-20. Dr. Toth discussed current research focusing on the role of the maternal environmental factors on the development and behavior of their offspring across multiple generations and epigenetic changes in the brain induced by stress.
Dr. Judy Tung, associate professor of clinical medicine and medical director of the Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Associates, received the 2012 Cornell ACN Physician of the Year Award. The Department of Nursing gives this award to recognize physicians who consistently practice with nursing and support staff in a collaborative, collegial, and respectful manner.
Dr. Susan J. Vannucci, research professor of neuroscience in pediatrics, was an invited speaker at the Neural Injury and Repair Seminar Series at the Neonatal Brain Disorders Center and Brain & Spinal Injury Center at University of California San Francisco in May. Dr. Vannucci was also invited to speak at the Remi Savioz GLUT1 Foundation Conference in July, her talk titled, "Developmental Regulation of Nutrient Delivery and Utilization to the Brain" in July. The Foundation was founded in January 2010 to raise funds for the research of diseases affected by glucose transporters and glucose metabolism.
