Awards and Honors

Dr. Augustine M.K. Choi, the Weill Chairman of the Weill Department of Medicine, the E. Hugh Luckey Distinguished Professor of Medicine, and a professor of medicine and of genetic medicine, gave the 2015 J. Burns Amberson Lecture at the American Thoracic Society's International Conference on May 17 in Denver. The lecture, considered the society's most prestigious award, is named in honor of Dr. James Burns Amberson, an international authority on chest disease and tuberculosis. The society selects a leader in pulmonary science who engages in basic or clinical research to give the lecture each year.

Dr. Peter Goldstein, a professor of anesthesiology and an associate professor of medical ethics in medicine, was appointed to a three-year term on the Association of University Anesthesiologists' Scientific Advisory Board in March. The association works to advance the art and science of anesthesiology by encouraging members to engage in original investigative research and develop innovative teaching methods.

Dr. Nikolaos J. Skubas, a professor of clinical anesthesiology and of anesthesiology in clinical cardiothoracic surgery, was appointed chair of the Fellowship of the American Society of Echocardiography Advisory Committee on June 16. Fellows of the society are echo practitioners of all specialty types who demonstrate proficiency and extraordinary commitment to the field of cardiovascular ultrasound.

Dr. Thomas Walsh, a professor of medicine and of medicine in microbiology and immunology, received the David C. White Research and Mentoring Award at the 115th American Society of Microbiology meeting. The society selects winners of the annual award from a pool of nominees who have contributed greatly to mentoring young biomedical researchers. Dr. Walsh was commended for his lifelong commitment to mentorship — he has mentored 166 students, many of whom are now leaders in their field — and for his commitment to diversity. In addition to receiving the award, Dr. Walsh gave the David C. White lecture, titled "Meeting the Challenges of Emerging Pathogens through Interdisciplinary Research and Mentoring,” on May 30.
