Arthritis Foundation Honors Orthopedic Surgeon's Lifetime Achievement
Dr. Edward V. Craig, professor of clinical orthopaedic surgery at Weill Cornell and an orthopedic surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Hospital for Special, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arthritis Foundation's New York chapter during its Ambassadors of Change Founders' Award Gala Nov. 20.
Dr. Craig, a pioneer in shoulder replacement who practices in the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service at Hospital for Special Surgery, designed both an anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacement system for patients with severe arthritis in their shoulder. He also specializes in rotator cuff repair of the shoulder and has designed a rotator cuff repair system. His other specialties include arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. Internationally known, Dr. Craig lectures throughout the United States and abroad.
The Arthritis Foundation's mission is to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases.

Dr. Neil Bander, the Bernard and Josephine Chaus Professor of Urological Oncology and professor of Urology, and Dr. Scott Tagawa, associate professor of clinical medicine and associate professor of clinical urology, were selected by the U.S. Department of Defense's Prostate Cancer Research Program to have their radiolabeled J591 studies highlighted in 2013 Program materials, which include the program booklet, features on the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program website, and the Prostate Cancer Research Program newsletter -- one of the most important ways the program communicates the accomplishments of its funded investigators to its stakeholders including Congress, prostate cancer survivors and advocates, peer and programmatic reviewers and the greater scientific community. The Prostate Cancer Research Program prioritizes research that will develop effective therapies for advanced prostate cancer or distinguish between indolent and aggressive disease.
Dr. Caitlin Hoffman, a sixth-year resident in neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center, was awarded the 2012 Kenneth Shulman Award from the Joint Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery. This award is given each year for the best paper presented at the annual meeting of the Joint Section by a resident-in-training. Previous Weill Cornell winners include Dr. David Sandberg in 2001 and Dr. Jeffrey Greenfield in 2007.
Dr. Adam Lichtman, associate professor of clinical anesthesiology at Weill Cornell and a commander in the United States Navy Medical Corps, received the United States Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal Nov. 30. Dr. Lichtman, whose training includes recognition and treatment of chemical and biological warfare casualties, disaster and undersea medicine, received the medal for his achievement while deployed in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Vaja Liluashvili, a visiting graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. Zeynep H. Gumus, instructor in the Institute for Computational Biomedicine and instructor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, was awarded a highly competitive Sao Paulo Research Foundation full fellowship to present at the international meeting Feb. 3-8 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He will present his research with Dr. Gumus, titled "iCAVE: immersive 3D visualization of complex biomolecular interaction networks."
Dr. Madhu Mazumdar, chief of the Division of Biostatistics and Epidemiology and professor of biostatistics in public health, was appointed to the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Alumnae Advisory Group in December. The Group's purpose is to work with the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine staff to guide successful program planning, community building and fundraising among the organization's alumnae. The Group serves the organization's mission to increase the number and impact of women in leadership in academic medicine, dentistry, and public health.
Dr. Thomas Murry, professor of speech-language pathology in otolaryngology, delivered the keynote lecture entitled, "The Voice Handicap Index and Other Voice Indices," at the First Kuwait Laryngology and Speech Conference under the patronage of His Excellency The Minister of Health of Kuwait , hosted Dec. 1-4 in Kuwait City, Kuwait.
Dr. Siobhan Pattwell, a postdoctoral fellow in the Sackler Institute mentored by Dr. B.J. Casey, director of the Sackler Institute at Weill Cornell, the Sackler Professor of Developmental Psychobiology and professor of psychology in psychiatry, and Dr. Francis S. Lee, professor of psychiatry and professor of pharmacology, was selected by Forbes Magazine as one of the top 30 scientists under 30 years of age. Dr. Pattwell was honored for her research into brain chemistry changes during adolescence. Her research may explain why the incidence of anxiety disorders spikes during the years prior to and during teen years.
Dr. Stephen Thomas, the Marjorie J. Topkins, M.D. -- Alan Van Poznak, M.D. Distinguished Professor of Anesthesiology, delivered the E.A. Rovenstine Memorial Lecture, titled "Delivering Anesthesia Care: Lessons From Old and New, Near and Far," at the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists Post Graduate Assembly Dec. 17 at the Marriott Marquis in New York. This annual Memorial Lecture series, which began in 1971, is dedicated to honor the illustrious career of Dr. Emery Andrew Rovenstine, who was director of Anesthesiology Service from 1935 to 1960 at a place he proudly referred to as "My Bellevue," which in his time was a charity hospital.
Dr. Thomas J. Walsh, professor of medicine, professor of medicine in microbiology and immunology and professor of medicine in pediatrics, was awarded a teaching commendation in "host defenses and infectious diseases" by University of Maryland School of Medicine's Class of 2015 for his six lecture series on medical mycology and pharmacology in "recognition of unwavering perseverance of excellence in teaching."
Dr. Ian Zlotolow, clinical assistant professor of surgery (dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery), was awarded the Henry Spenadel Award Nov. 5 for lifetime achievement from the New York County Dental Society. The prestigious Henry Spenadel Award is bestowed upon an individual in recognition of his/her contribution to the advancement of the dental profession.
