The Department of Pediatrics has established the Comprehensive Center for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, recognized by the CARES Foundation as the first Comprehensive Center for Excellence for Children with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia in the nation. Dr. Maria G. Vogiatzi, chief of Pediatric Endocrinology, the Harold and Percy Uris Associate Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism and associate professor of clinical pediatrics at Weill Cornell and a pediatrician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, will serve as medical director. Dr. Dix Poppas, vice chair of the Department of Urology, the Rogers Family Foundation Professor of Pediatric Urology, professor of urology, professor of urology in obstetrics and gynecology, professor of urology in pediatrics and professor of urology in surgery (plastic surgery) at Weill Cornell and chief of the Institute for Pediatric Urology at the Komansky Center for Children's Health at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, will be the surgical director.
Dr. Peter Grunert, a fellow on a research team led by Dr. Roger Hartl, chief of Spinal Surgery and Neurotrauma, the Leonard and Fleur Harlan Clinical Scholar and associate professor of neurological surgery, received the Mayfield Basic Science Award for, "Tissue-engineered Intervertebral Discs: Long Term Outcome in the Rodent Spine," from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. The purpose of the section is to foster the use of spinal neurosurgical methods for the treatment of disease of the spinal neural elements, the spine and peripheral nerves, as well as to advance spinal and neurosurgery and related fields.
Dr. Utthara Nayar, a postdoctoral associate in the lab of Dr. Ethel Cesarman, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, was selected to for an oral presentation and received an American Society of Hematology Abstract Achievement Award at the Society's annual meeting in December. The Society, the world's largest professional society concerned with the causes and treatments of blood disorders, presents these awards to undergraduate students, medical students, graduate students, resident physicians and postdoctoral fellows who are both first author and presenter of an abstract.
Dr. Sarju Patel, assistant professor of ophthalmology, was appointed consultant for the 2013 Knowledge Base Panel for Uveitis by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The American Academy of Ophthalmology is the largest national membership association of Eye M.D.s.
Dr. Theodore Schwartz, professor of neurological surgery, professor of neurological surgery in otolaryngology and associate professor of neurological surgery in neurology, gave a plenary session talk during the North American Skull Base Society's annual meeting Feb. 15-17 in Miami, Fla. The talk was titled, "Endoscopic Endonasal Resection of Meningiomas." The Society is a professional medical society that facilitates communication worldwide between individuals pursuing clinical and research excellence in skull base surgery.
Two research fellows in Associate Professor of Surgery (Plastic Surgery) Dr. Jason Spector's Laboratory for Bioregenerative Medicine and Surgery in the Department of Surgery won presentation awards from the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons at its March 11 meeting. Dr. Karina Hernandez won the Best Poster Award for, "High Fidelity Tissue Engineering of Patient Specific Auricles for Reconstruction of Pediatric Microtia," and Dr. Rachel Campbell won the Best Oral Presentation Award for "Fabrication of Prevascularized Type I Collagen Tissue Engineered Constructs for In Vivo Microanastomosis."
