Dr. Joseph Fins, chief of the Division of Medical Ethics, the E. William Davis Jr. M.D. Professor of Medical Ethics, professor of medicine, professor of public health and professor of medicine in psychiatry, received the 57th annual Saul A. Schwartz, M.D. '30 AOA Visiting Professor Lectureship from New York Medical College in Valhalla, N.Y., for his April 30 presentation "Rights Come to Mind: The Ethics of the Minimally Conscious State."

Dr. Paul M. Heerdt, professor of anesthesiology and professor of pharmacology, was appointed chair of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists' Research Committee in May. This committee provides oversight for research programs the society participates in, and is responsible for awarding grants that support both junior and mid-career faculty. The society is an international organization of physicians that promotes excellence in patient care through education and research in perioperative care for patients undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular procedures.

Dr. Douglas Jones, a clinical fellow, won an Eastern Vascular Society Annual Meeting Travel Scholarship last September and was a finalist during the Resident and Associate Society-American College of Surgeons' essay contest.

Dr. Juan M. Mosquera, assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, was named section editor in precision medicine for the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This new section will focus on review of manuscripts on precision medicine with an emphasis on predictive biomarkers, biomarker testing and corresponding targeted therapies and clinical trials.

First-year medical student Yue Linda Wu, was awarded a Swaiman Medical Scholarship from the Child Neurology Foundation to conduct research this summer with Dr. Praveen Raju, the Caryl and Israel A. Englander Clinical Scholar, assistant professor of pediatrics and assistant professor of pediatrics in neurology. The scholarship awards $3,500 to up to 10 first- and second-year U.S. and Canadian medical students.
