Dr. Leonard Girardi, the O. Wayne Isom Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and professor of cardiothoracic surgery, was named a "Superhero of Heart and Stroke" by the American Heart Association. The Superheroes of Heart and Stroke are men and women who go above and beyond the call of duty in their efforts to support the American Heart Association's life-saving mission to build healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Dr. Girardi is one of 11 local experts to earn this distinction.

Dr. David Hamburg, the DeWitt Wallace Distinguished Scholar, was honored at the inaugural Andrew Carnegie Distinguished Lecture on Conflict Prevention, co-sponsored by the United Nations and Foreign Policy Association, on May 1. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he was inspired by the contributions of Dr. Hamburg, who through his 15 years as the head of the Carnegie Corporation helped transform the way the UN, governments and the public viewed issues from public health and education to nuclear non-proliferation and conflict prevention.

Dr. Douglas Jones and Dr. Gregory Salzler, who are both clinical fellows, received Teaching and Falcon Awards from the Department of Surgery for their dedication and contribution to teaching and mentoring medical students this past academic year.

Dr. Gary J. Lelli Jr., assistant professor of ophthalmology, was named one of the Weill Cornell Medical College Healthcare Policy Leadership Fellows for the 2013-2014 academic year. A joint effort by the Medical College and the Weill Cornell Physician Organization, the program identifies faculty members who have the potential and motivation to become leaders. The program provides the fellows with opportunities to develop leadership skills as they work to design innovative solutions to improve the health care provided at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Jennifer Sandadi, assistant professor of anesthesiology, received the Department of Anesthesiology's Teacher of the Year Award at the Housestaff Graduation May 31. The housestaff elects recipients for the annual award.
