Awards and Honors

Dr. Palmer Bessey, the Aronson Family Foundation Professor in Burn Care and professor of surgery, delivered the American Burn Association's Presidential Address, "How D'ye Know," during its 46th annual meeting hosted March 25-March 28 in Boston. The American Burn Association is dedicated to improving the lives of everyone affected by burn injury. The association and its members dedicate their efforts and resources to promoting and supporting burn-related research, education, care, rehabilitation and prevention.

Dr. Irene Hyler, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry, and Dr. James Wirth, associate professor of clinical psychiatry, received the Nancy C.A. Roeske, M.D., Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Medical Student Education from the American Psychiatric Association on Jan. 22. The certificate is awarded annually to association members and fellows who have made outstanding and sustaining contributions to medical student education. The American Psychiatric Association is the world's largest psychiatric organization.

Dr. Vivian S.B. Pender, clinical associate professor of psychiatry, was elected to be a trustee representing New York State for the American Psychiatric Association in its Jan. 31 national elections. As a trustee, she will strive to increase mentorship of junior psychiatrists, promote leadership positions for women and minorities, increase transparency of association governance and improve advocacy to local and federal government officials.
