Three trophies

Dr. Hooman Kamel, professor of neurology, received the 2024 Stroke Council Award from the American Heart Association. This award recognizes and encourages those who actively work to integrate stroke and heart disease in clinical care, education or research.


Dr. Fabrizio Michelassi, chair of surgery and the Lewis Atterbury Stimson Professor of Surgery, was elected chair of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Board of Regents for a one-year term. As chair, Dr. Michelassi will work closely with the ACS leadership to continue improving the care of the surgical patient and safeguarding standards of care in an optimal and ethical practice environment.

Dr. Perdita Permaul, associate professor of clinical pediatrics, was named the incoming president of the New York Allergy and Asthma Society. The NYAAS focuses on creating a forum for both professional and social exchange for allergists and allergy interested professionals and works closely with other regional allergy societies to promote the field of allergy/immunology.

Dr. Margaret Elizabeth Ross, the Nathan Cummings Professor in Neurology and professor of neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute, joined the board of directors of the American Brain Coalition, a non-profit organization for patient and biomedical research advocacy. The ABC seeks to advance the understanding of brain functions and reduce the burden of brain disorders through public education, engagement and advocacy.

Dr. Rahul Sharma, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Barbara and Stephen Friedman Professor of Emergency Medicine, was unanimously elected as vice-chair of the New York State Board for Medicine. As the board's vice-chair, Dr. Sharma will help oversee licensing of physicians and physician assistants to uphold medical standards and protect public health.

Sarah Smith, executive director of public relations, was named by Women We Admire as one of the Top 50 Women Leaders in Communications for 2024. Each year, Women We Admire recognizes some of the most influential female leaders who are experts in crafting narratives that drive both public perception and organizational success while influencing the future of the industry.
