Dr. Laura Alonso, chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and the Herbert J. and Ann L. Siegel Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, has been selected to be a fellow of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program at Drexel University College of Medicine. The competitive, year-long fellowship is the only program in North America dedicated to preparing women for senior leadership roles in academic science institutions.

“I am tremendously grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow through this outstanding training program. I’m excited to meet so many talented colleagues from across the country and to learn from inspiring ELUMs who have participated in previous years,” Dr. Alonso said. “I hope this experience will help me build great new programs, ideas and energy at the interface of medicine and science at Weill Cornell Medicine.”

Dr. Alonso, who is also director of the Weill Center for Metabolic Health, focuses on diabetes research and patient care. She is one of 72 senior women faculty from medical, dental and public health schools across the country accepted for this year’s ELAM fellowship.

Established in 1995, the program is dedicated to developing the professional and personal skills required to lead and manage in complex health care environments. The program teaches fellows financial, management and leadership strategies, and offers coaching, networking and mentoring opportunities. More than 1,200 ELAM alumnae (ELUMs) hold leadership positions at institutions worldwide.
