Prestigious Awards Recognize Weill Cornell Faculty and Students

Weill Cornell Medicine faculty members were honored with awards for their exemplary achievements in medical research, education and care at the institution’s virtual commencement ceremony on May 20.

Dr. Dan Landau, associate professor of medicine, was awarded the Jeanne and Herbert Siegel Faculty Development Award. The prize recognizes an early-career faculty member for exemplary clinical and research contributions, as well as teaching and mentoring medical students. Dr. Judy Tung, associate professor of clinical medicine, was the 2020 honoree.

Dr. Julie Magarian Blander, the Gladys and Roland Harriman Professor of Immunology in Medicine, was awarded the Jeanne and Herbert Siegel Award for Outstanding Medical Research. The award recognizes exceptional professional achievement and scientific innovation, as well as a commitment to positively impact future generations of researchers. Dr. Virginia Pascual, the Drukier Director of the Gale and Ira Drukier Institute for Children’s Health and the Ronay Menschel Professor of Pediatrics, was the 2020 awardee.

Dr. Theresa Milner, a professor of neuroscience, was awarded the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentorship. This honor recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates an outstanding commitment to supporting colleagues to become academic leaders in clinical care, research or education.

Dr. Dana Gurvitch, assistant professor of clinical anesthesiology, was awarded the Jeanne and Herbert Siegel Award for Excellence in Medical Education. This prize recognizes a faculty member for exemplary contributions to medical education. Dr. Anthony Ogedegbe, assistant professor of clinical medicine, was the 2020 award winner.

Dr. Maria Lame, an assistant professor of clinical emergency medicine and of clinical pediatrics, was awarded the Jeanne and Herbert Siegel Award for Excellence in Emergency Medicine. The award honors an outstanding emergency medicine faculty member who demonstrates clinical skill and dedication to the field of emergency medicine. Dr. Flavio Gaudio, assistant professor of clinical emergency medicine, was the 2020 honoree.

Dr. Ana Alzaga Fernández, assistant professor of ophthalmology, was awarded the Donald J. D’Amico, M.D., Prize for Excellence in Ophthalmology. Now in its fourth year, the award acknowledges an outstanding faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Christopher Starr, associate professor of ophthalmology, was the 2020 award winner.

Dr. Kira Minkis, associate professor of clinical dermatology, was awarded the Richard D. Granstein, M.D., Prize for Excellence in Dermatology. This award acknowledges professional achievement, clinical skill and research contributions in the field of dermatology. Dr. Anna Bender-Zeckendorf, assistant professor of clinical dermatology, was the 2020 awardee.

In addition, students received Jeanne and Herbert Siegel Student Prizes, which carry $25,000 scholarships to help support and enhance their medical education at Weill Cornell Medical College. Students were selected for scholarships based upon a demonstrated financial need, high academic achievement and leadership potential in their fields.
