Dr. Juan Cubillos-Ruiz, the William J. Ledger, M.D., Distinguished Assistant Professor for Infection and Immunology in Obstetrics and Gynecology and an assistant professor of microbiology and immunology, has been awarded an ASPIRE Award from the Mark Foundation for Cancer Research for his research entitled “Enhancing Cancer Immunotherapy through Pharmacological Inhibition of ER Stress Sensors.” Designed to answer key proof-of-concept questions in a short timeframe, the ASPIRE (Accelerating Scientific Platforms and Innovative Research) program funds high risk, high reward approaches to solving complex problems in cancer research.

Dr. Oliver Fein, associate dean for affiliations and professor of clinical medicine and of clinical healthcare policy and research, was honored by the Medicare Rights Center in October at its 2018 annual awards dinner. The center is an independent, national non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that Medicare keeps its promise to older Americans and people with disabilities by providing online information and personal counseling about Medicare enrollment. Dr. Fein was honored for the excellent care he provides and his commitment to excellence in medical education, and for his passionate fight to ensure that all Americans have access to comprehensive, affordable health coverage. 

Dr. Costantino Iadecola, director of the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute, the Anne Parrish Titzell Professor of Neurology and a professor of neuroscience, has been elected to the American Journal of Hypertension’s Board of Directors. The American Journal of Hypertension is a monthly, peer-reviewed journal that provides a forum for scientific inquiry of the highest standards in the field of hypertension and related cardiovascular disease. The journal publishes high-quality original research and review articles on basic sciences, molecular biology, clinical and experimental hypertension, cardiology, epidemiology, pediatric hypertension, endocrinology, neurophysiology, and nephrology.

Dr. Sandip Kapur, the Jeanette and Jeffrey Lasdon Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Programs and professor of surgery (transplantation), was elected as a fellow of the American Surgical Association. The induction took place during the association’s 138th annual meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. in April.
