Awards and Honors Across Weill Cornell Medicine - December 29, 2017

Dr. Antonio Bernardo, an associate professor of research in neurological surgery, on June 2 received the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for his achievements in the field of neurosurgery and the neurosciences. The Order of Merit is the highest ranking honor in Italy, awarded for merit in the fields of literature, the arts, economy, public service or social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities. Dr. Bernardo received his award at the Italian Consulate in New York.

Ronan Chaligne, a postdoctoral associate in medicine, in March received a $105,000 two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant from the Lymphoma Research Foundation for his abstract “Non-Genetic Determinants of CLL Clonal Evolution.” The foundation funds innovative lymphoma research and provides patients and healthcare professionals updated information about lymphoma.

Dr. David Fishman, a professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology, was on June 24 honored with the Leadership in Cancer Care Award from the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Middle Village. The society funds and conducts research, shares expert information and supports patients with cancer.

Dr. Janna Gordon-Elliott, an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry, received the Nancy C.A. Roseske Certificate of Excellence in Medical Student Education from the American Psychiatry Association during its annual meeting in May. The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding and sustaining contributions to medical student education. The association aims to ensure humane care and effective treatment for all persons with mental illness, including substance use disorders.

Dr. Allison Gorman-Steiner, an assistant professor of pediatrics and of clinical pediatrics, was named a Healthcare Leadership Fellow by Weill Cornell Medicine and the Weill Cornell Physician Organization to foster her development as a physician leader. The fellowship seeks to prepare the “leaders of tomorrow” to develop innovative solutions for efficient, patient-centered and cost-effective healthcare delivery. Dr. Gorman-Steiner will be supported with leadership training opportunities, mentoring and engagement with nationally known leaders.

Leandro Venturutti, a postdoctoral associate in medicine, in March received a $180,000, three-year Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Career Development Program for his project “Mutations disrupting gene enhancer epigenetic complexes as drivers of lymphomagenesis.” The society aims to fund research, find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients.

Dr. Harel Weinstein, chairman of physiology and biophysics, the Maxwell M. Upson Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, professor of physiology and biophysics and a tri-institutional professor, in August was named a 2018 fellow of the Biophysical Society for his contributions to the biophysics of G-protein coupled receptors, neurotransmitter transporters and membrane dynamics. The award honors members of the society who have demonstrated excellence in science, contributed to the field of biophysics and supported the society. The society, through its 9,000 members, encourages development and dissemination of knowledge in biophysics. Weinstein will receive his award Feb. 19 at the society’s annual meeting in San Francisco.
