As a Cuban immigrant, Dr. Fernando Martinez seized opportunities the United States afforded him. Now a pulmonologist and parent, he’s dedicated his career to helping others, and has inspired his children to do the same.
“I am highly appreciative of the fact that this country has provided me opportunities,” said Dr. Martinez, chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. “What I do in medicine is the perfect thing; it is the ideal job. Not only do I have the opportunity to be able to help individuals in a clinical setting; I have the opportunity to do clinical, translational investigation. And my kids have grown up seizing opportunities that allow them to help others.”
