Dr. J. Levi Chazen, an assistant professor of radiology, was appointed to the American Society of Spine Radiology Education and Research Committee in November, as well as chair of its Louis A. Gilula MD Mentor Committee. The education and research committee plans, proposes and helps implement events to further the educational mission of the society, which is devoted to producing and supporting educational programs and practicums on spine imaging and intervention that strengthen the practice of spine radiology. The Louis A. Gilula MD Mentor Committee oversees the research award of the same name.
Dr. Leonard Girardi, chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the O. Wayne Isom Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and a professor of cardiothoracic surgery, was appointed to the American Board of Thoracic Surgery Oral Examiners Committee on Nov. 1. The board’s purpose is to protect the public by establishing and maintaining high standards in thoracic surgery. To achieve these objectives, the organization has established qualifications for examination and procedures for certification. The exam’s oral component is given by a total of six examiners who are carefully chosen for their expertise in the field.
Dr. Philip E. Stieg, chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery and a professor of neurological surgery, was named the second president of the Brain Tumor Foundation on Nov. 10. The foundation focuses on early detection of brain tumors and addresses the social, financial and emotional needs of diagnosed patients and their families.
