The annual Career Achievement Award recognizes distinguished senior investigators who have made significant contributions to the field of medical decision making. Dr. Mushlin will receive the award during the society's 37th annual meeting, hosted Oct. 18-21 in St. Louis.
"I am very pleased and honored to be recognized by my colleagues for this award," said Dr. Mushlin, who is also a professor of healthcare policy and research and of medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. "I have been a member of the Society for Medical Decision Making nearly since its inception. It has become one of the strongest and most relied on academic resources for evaluating new clinical technologies and strategies in medicine through comparative effectiveness research. My own career has benefited greatly from my association with this organization, and I am incredibly appreciative of this honor."
Dr. Mushlin's research focuses on the comparative effectiveness of clinical interventions, with an emphasis on the use of large data sets and observational research designs as alternatives to randomized controlled clinical trials. He also concentrates on the application of decision and cost-effectiveness analysis to the evaluation of clinical policies and medical technologies, with the aim of improving the quality and efficiency of medical care and public health.
"I cannot think of a more deserving clinical researcher to receive this award than Dr. Mushlin," said Dr. Rainu Kaushal, chair of the Department of Healthcare Policy & Research at Weill Cornell Medicine and physician-in-chief of healthcare policy and research at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. "Al is an outstanding scientist, who is an international leader in patient-centered comparative effectiveness research and medical decision making. I am thrilled that he is being honored with this prestigious award."
