Awards and Honors

Dr. Sabine Ehrt, a professor of microbiology and immunology, gave a plenary lecture entitled "Mycobacterium tuberculosis: Where Metabolism and Virulence Intersect” at the American Society for Microbiology's 115th general meeting on May 31 in New Orleans. The meeting showcased the central role of microbes in the biosphere by communicating today's cutting-edge science. The society, with more than 39,000 members, is the largest and oldest single life science membership organization in the world.

Dr. Claire Henchcliffe, an associate professor of neurology and of neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute, received the Parkinson Disease Foundation Conference Award at the Parkinson's Disease Foundation's 2015 Meeting on May 18-19. The conference supports gathers experts in the field in order to address emerging clinical or basic science questions about Parkinson's. The foundation is a leading national presence in Parkinson's disease research, education and public advocacy.

Dr. Thomas Walsh, a professor of medicine and of medicine in microbiology and immunology, received the David C. White Research and Mentoring Award at the 115th American Society of Microbiology meeting. The society selects winners of the annual award from a pool of nominees who have contributed greatly to mentoring young biomedical researchers. Dr. Walsh was commended for his lifelong commitment to mentorship — he has mentored 166 students, many of whom are now leaders in their field — and for his commitment to diversity. In addition to receiving the award, Dr. Walsh gave the David C. White lecture, titled "Meeting the Challenges of Emerging Pathogens through Interdisciplinary Research and Mentoring,” on May 30.
