Dr. Owen K. Davis, a professor of reproductive medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, was chosen as president-elect of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Board of Directors during its annual meeting in Hawaii last fall. The society’s goal is to be the nationally and internationally recognized leader for multidisciplinary information, education, advocacy and standards in the field of reproductive medicine. Members must demonstrate the high ethical principles of the medical profession, evince an interest in infertility, reproductive medicine and biology, and adhere to the objectives of the society.
Dr. Mary Simmerling, an assistant professor of research integrity in medicine, was the keynote speaker at the GlobeMed and Cornell Health International Global Health Gala on Feb. 28. Dr. Simmerling’s lecture was titled "The future of global health: navigating a complex ethical terrain." GlobeMed is a network of university students who partner with grassroots organizations around the world to help improve the health of the impoverished. At Cornell, GlobeMed is working to provide ecological water filters to help prevent severe gastrointestinal issues, to provide families with improved cooking conditions and to combat childhood malnutrition in Guatemala.
Dr. Aliza Solomon, an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics, was elected in January to join the Englewood, New Jersey Board of Health. The Board of Health makes rules and regulations in the interest of public health and hires the health department director and health officer. The Englewood City Council appoints seven members for three-year terms.
Dr. Jonathan D. Victor, the Fred Plum Professor of Neurology and a professor of neurology, neuroscience and computational neuroscience in computational biomedicine, was appointed a senior editor on the Vision Research Editorial Board for a one-year term that began on April 1. Vision Research is a journal devoted to the functional aspects of human vertebrate and invertebrate vision, and publishes experimental and observational studies, reviews and theoretical papers firmly based upon the current facts of visual science.
