Dr. Fabrizio Michelassi, chair of the Department of Surgery and the Lewis Atterbury Stimson Professor of Surgery, was an invited lecturer at the 116th French Congress of Surgery hosted in October in Paris, France. The name of his lecture was "Novel Strategies in the Surgical Management of Complex Small Bowel Crohn’s Disease."

Dr. Theodore Schwartz, the David and Ursel Barnes Professor of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery, and a professor of neurological surgery, neurological surgery in otolaryngology and of neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute, gave two keynote addresses at the Epilepsy Society of Australia annual meeting on Nov. 6 in Melbourne, Australia. The first talk, introducing the annual theme, was titled "Optical Mapping of Seizure Initiation and Propagation." The second keynote addressed "Novel and Experimental Therapies for Epilepsy Using Brain Stimulation." The society is a professional organization for clinicians, scientists and technologists involved in the diagnosis, treatment and research of epilepsy in Australia.

Dr. Ramin Zabih, an associate professor of computer science in radiology, presented his research on solving medical deconvolution problems with higher-order graph cuts on Nov. 21 at Stony Brook University as part of the Department of Computer Science’s Distinguished Lectures Series.
