Dr. Joseph J. Fins Wins Patricia Price Browne Prize in Biomedical Ethics

Dr. Joseph J. Fins, the E. William Davis, Jr. M.D. professor of medical ethics and chief of the division of medical ethics at Weill Cornell Medical College, has been awarded the Patricia Price Browne Prize in Biomedical Ethics from the University Of Oklahoma College Of Medicine.

The $10,000 biennial award, established to honor Patricia Price Browne, an Oklahoma City community leader, recognizes an exceptional person in medicine or professional ethics. One of the world’s leading bioethicists, Dr. Fins has made significant contributions to understanding the ethics surrounding brain injury and disorders of consciousness, palliative care and researching neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Dr. Fins will receive the Browne Prize on May 13 at the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center. He will also be the pediatric grand rounds guest lecturer at The Children’s Hospital at Oklahoma University Medical Center.

"I am especially delighted to have been selected to receive the Patricia Price Browne Prize and grateful to the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine for this honor," Dr. Fins said. "As a national award, the Prize affirms the importance of biomedical ethics and recognizes all who seek to bring the scientific and humanistic dimensions of clinical care into better alignment."

A graduate of the medical college, Dr. Fins is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an Academico de Honor of the National Royal Academy of Medicine of Spain. Author of the forthcoming, "Rights Come to Mind: Brain Injury, Ethics and the Struggle for Consciousness" to be published by the Cambridge University Press, Dr. Fins has authored more than 250 publications, including books and peer-reviewed journal articles. A past president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities and a Master of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Fins was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and currently serves on the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law, as well as the New York State Palliative Care and Education Council.

Additional Awards and Honors

Dr. Ericalyn Kasdorf, an assistant professor of pediatrics, and Dr. Melanie Wilson-Taylor, an assistant professor of pediatrics, were selected Physicians of the Year by NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in September. Erin Kelly was recognized as a Physician Assistant of the Year. They received their awards during a ceremony in November.

Dr. Roberta Marongiu, an instructor in neurological surgery, was selected on Sept. 22 for the 2014-2015 Leadership in Academic Medicine Program, a year-long faculty development program for junior faculty at Weill Cornell Medical College. This year’s class comes from 18 different departments. The program’s monthly seminars introduce participants to the fundamentals of career planning, self-management and leadership skills. The skills and understandings developed in this program are intended to provide faculty with tools that will enable them to accomplish their primary career goals and aspirations.
