Dr. Enrique Rodriguez-Boulan Receives Argentina’s Prestigious RAICES Prize of International Cooperation in Science, Technology and Cooperation

Dr. Enrique Rodriguez-Boulan, the Charles and Margaret Dyson Professor in Ophthalmology Research and a professor of cell biology in ophthalmology and of cell and developmental biology, is a winner of the RAICES Prize of International Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation from Argentina’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation.

Established in 2010, the RAICES Prize recognizes significant lifetime contributions to the science and culture of Argentina from Argentines living abroad. Dr. Rodriguez-Boulan has participated in numerous collaborative activities with Argentina, such as training Argentine scientists, evaluating projects and research institutes, and organizing scientific meetings there and in neighboring Chile. Dr. Rodriguez-Boulan was also president of the Argentine-North-American Association of Science and Technology in the United States.

Dr. Rodriguez-Boulan, who is also a professor of cell and developmental biology and of neurosciences in the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, was one of 10 scientists who were honored by Dr. Lino Barañao, the Argentinian minister of science, technology and productive innovation, during a ceremony Nov. 17 in Buenos Aires.

"It is very exciting for me to be recognized with the RAICES Prize," Dr. Rodriguez-Boulan said. "My scientific career in the United States was made possible by the excellent, completely free-of-cost education I received in Argentina from kindergarten through medical school. This recognition implies that my activities have had significant, positive impact in Argentina."

RAICES, an acronym for "Network of Argentine Investigators and Scientists Abroad," means "roots" in Spanish. The prize is a sister award to the Dr. Luis Federico Leloir Prize, which is bestowed on foreign investigators for contributions that enrich international scientific cooperation with the nation. Dr. Laurie H. Glimcher, the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell, received the Leloir Prize in 2012.
