Awards and Honors

Dr. Roger Härtl, a professor of neurological surgery, has been named to the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery's International Board of Directors and appointed Centers of Excellence Chair at the society's Global Forum hosted on Sept 19-21 in Miami. As chair, Dr. Härtl will lead the effort to evaluate and endorse those institutions that best follow the principles of minimally invasive spine surgery and achieve superior patient outcomes. The society is an international organization of surgeons who specialize in minimally invasive spine surgery and focuses on educating members in the rapidly changing field of minimal-access spine surgery, measuring patient outcomes and identifying Centers of Excellence.

Dr. Thanakorn Jirasevijinda, an associate professor of pediatrics (education) was selected as one of 12 finalists for the Association for Medical Education in Europe's Patil Family Innovation in Teaching Awards. The awards recognize medical education pedagogical innovation, as well as assessment or curriculum planning. The association promotes international excellence in education in the health care professions across the continuum of undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education.

Dr. Anne Moore, a professor of clinical medicine, was elected chair for the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Leadership Development Program. The program provides formal leadership training for those interested in improving their skills and serving in increasingly challenging roles within the society and in other organizations. The society is committed to conquering cancer through research, education, prevention and delivery of high-quality patient care.

Dr. Harel Weinstein, chairman of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, the Maxwell M. Upson Professor of Physiology and Biophysics and a professor of physiology and biophysics, was selected chair of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology's Committee on Data Science and Informatics in September. The federation's mission is to advance health and welfare by promoting progress and education in biological and biomedical sciences through service to our member societies and collaborative advocacy.
