Dr. Katherine Hajjar Elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science

Dr. Katherine Amberson Hajjar, associate dean of research, professor of pediatrics and the Brine Family Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology, has been elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Hajjar was one of 401 scientists and engineers elected this year as fellows of the AAAS, the world’s largest general scientific society. The fellowship recognizes members for their outstanding scientific and social efforts to advance science and honors them for their contributions to innovation, education and leadership.

AAAS will honor the new class of fellows on Feb. 14 during the association’s 2015 annual meeting. Each fellow will receive a certificate and a gold and blue rosette pin.

"It is an honor to have our lab's research recognized by the AAAS," said Dr. Hajjar, who is also a professor of cell and developmental biology and of pediatrics in medicine. "I'm very grateful to Weill Cornell for providing the collegial and stimulating environment that has allowed our work to flourish. I hope this award will provide greater opportunities to interact with leading biomedical scientists, teachers and policymakers."

Dr. Hajjar is "being honored for her distinguished contributions in hematology research, particularly in understanding the functional relationship between the dissolution of blood clots and formation of new blood vessels,” according to the AAAS.

AAAS is an international organization committed to the advancement of science to benefit all people. It aims to facilitate international cooperation in science, amplify communication among scientists and contribute a voice for science in societal discussions.

Additional Awards and Honors

Dr. Neel Mehta, an assistant professor of anesthesiology, has been selected for this year's Weill Cornell Physician Healthcare Leaders Fellows program. The program seeks to identify and foster the development of Weill Cornell's "Leaders of Tomorrow," who will help the medical college develop innovative solutions for efficient, patient-centered and cost-effect healthcare delivery. The program began on July 1.

Dr. Art Sedrakyan, an associate professor of healthcare policy and research and of healthcare policy and research in cardiothoracic surgery, received an award from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for his successful tenure as the vice chair of the Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee. The CMS administers Medicare, Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program in partnership with state governments and private health insurance programs.
