Awards and Honors

Dr. Dylan Edwards, assistant professor of neurology, gave an invited address at the Institute of Medicine's Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders on Dec 2 in Washington, D.C. The title of his talk was "State of the Science: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation & Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation." The institute is an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public.

Dr. David Hajjar, the Frank H.T. Rhodes Distinguished Professor of Cardiovascular Biology and Genetics, professor of biochemistry and professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, was named a senior fellow in the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs' Science, Technology and Public Policy Program at the Harvard-Kennedy School of Government for the 2013-2014 academic year. The program applies methods drawn from technology assessment, political science, economics, management and law to study problems where science, technology and policy intersect. Its goal is to develop and promote policies that expand the contribution of science and technology to human welfare.

Dr. O. Wayne Isom, chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Terry Allen Kramer Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and professor of cardiothoracic surgery, was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from Texas Tech University on Dec. 14. Dr. Isom completed his undergraduate studies at Texas Tech in 1962.

Dr. Andrew I. Schafer, director of the Richard T. Silver Center for Myeloproliferative Neoplasms and professor of medicine, was granted honorary lifetime membership in the Tinsley Randolph Harrison Society of Vanderbilt University on Sept 19. The Harrison Society supports new initiatives in education, biomedical research and patient care for the benefit of physicians who practice internal medicine by holding forums and meetings and publishing appropriate educational materials approved by its members.
