Amma Asare, a fourth year M.D.-Ph.D. student, was recently awarded the 2013 UNCF/Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowship. This fellowship is designed to assist black graduate students complete coursework, conduct research and prepare the dissertation required for a doctoral degree in a biomedical science or engineering field. Asare works in the laboratory of Dr. Elaine Fuchs at The Rockefeller University.
Dr. Steven Friedman, professor of clinical surgery, presented the first Heberdon Society Lecture of the 2013-14 academic year on Sept. 26 at the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Friedman's talk described the life and career of Elizabeth Blackwell, who as the first female physician in the United States was a 19th century medical pioneer.
Dr. Marc Goldstein, the Matthew P. Hardy, PhD Distinguished Professor of Reproductive Medicine and Urology, professor of urology and professor of reproductive medicine, received the 2013 Star Award from the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. This award is given annually to recognize and thank members who have dedicated hours of time and service to shape the society into the leading organization for reproductive medicine. The American Society of Reproductive Medicine is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the advancement of the art, science and practice of reproductive medicine.
Dr. Sandra Hurtado RĂșa, a postdoctoral associate in the Division of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, presented the lecture "A Model for the Detection of Abnormal Regions in Quantitative Cerebral Maps with Application to Myelin Water Fraction Maps" at the 2013 Joint Statistical Meetings hosted Aug. 2-8 in Montreal, Canada. The conference was run by the American Statistical Association, the world's largest community of statisticians.
