Dr. Jessica S. Ancker, assistant professor in the Center for Healthcare Informatics and Policy, assistant professor of public health in pediatrics and assistant professor of public health, will speak during the Institute of Medicine's Health Literacy Roundtable on July 18 at the National Academies of Sciences in Washington, D.C. She will speak about how to explain risks to patients in the context of shared decision-making. The roundtable series brings together leaders from academia, industry, government, foundations, associations and representatives of patient and consumer interests who work to improve health literacy. To achieve its mission, the roundtable discusses challenges facing health literacy practice and research, and identifies approaches to promote health literacy through mechanisms and partnerships in both the public and private sectors.

Dr. John Boockvar, director of the Neurosurgical Laboratory for Translational Stem Cell Research, director of the Brain Tumor Research Group, co-director of the Brain and Spinal Tumor Program, co-director of Surgical Neurooncology and professor of neurological surgery, received the Gary Lichtenstein Humanitarian Award from Voice Against Brain Cancer for his work in brain tumor research during the nonprofit's annual gala on June 6. Additionally, nurse practitioner Ashley Ray was honored during the gala with the Compassionate Care Award for her tireless work on behalf of patients. The nonprofit's mission is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers affected by this devastating disease.

Dr. R.V. Paul Chan, director of the Retina Service, fellowship director of the Surgical Vitreo-Retinal Program, the St. Giles Associate Professor of Pediatric Retina and associate professor of ophthalmology, and Dr. Jessica B. Ciralsky, assistant professor of ophthalmology, were accepted into the academy's Leadership Development Program. The program, which begins in November, seeks to identify ophthalmologists with the potential to become leaders in ophthalmology societies, provide orientation and skill development to these leaders to promote the field and facilitate the promotion of program graduates into leadership positions. The American Academy of Ophthalmology is the largest national membership association of Eye M.D.s.

Dr. Madelon L. Finkel, director of the Office of Global Health Education and professor of clinical public health, was an invited speaker at a roundtable discussion hosted by the Business School at Fordham University's Global Healthcare Innovation Management Center on May 2. The conference, "Determining the Value of Healthcare — A Multi-Stakeholder Perspective," addressed three topic areas related to health outcome measurement and evaluation. Dr. Marcus Reidenberg was chair of the session.

Dr. James Gallagher, assistant professor of surgery, and Dr. Katrina Mitchell, a fellow of the Center for Global Health and a resident, won a "best in category" award for their poster presentation, "Survey of Burn Care and Proposal for Burn Center in East Africa: An International Academic Burn Center Exchange," at the American Burn Association's annual conference in April in Seattle, Wash.

Dr. Barbara L. Hempstead, the O. Wayne Isom Professor of Medicine and professor of medicine, was accepted as a fellow in the 2013-2014 Class of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program. The program is the only in-depth national program dedicated to preparing senior women faculty at schools of medicine, dentistry and public health to effect sustained positive change as institutional leaders.

Dr. David Lyden, the Stavros S. Niarchos Associate Professor in Pediatric Cardiology, associate professor of pediatrics and associate professor of cell and developmental biology, gave the University of Vermont graduate college commencement speech on May 18. Dr. Lyden earned his doctorate at and is an alumnus of the University of Vermont.

Dr. David Shapiro, chairman of the Music and Medicine Initiative and clinical professor of psychiatry, received a Voluntary Faculty Award of Recognition for his outstanding teaching, service and support of Weill Cornell's educational mission and students during the annual Celebration of Teaching dinner June 19 at the Cornell Club.
