Dr. Joseph J. Fins, the E. William Davis Jr., M.D. Professor of Medical Ethics, chief of the Division of Medical Ethics, professor of medicine, professor of public health and professor of medicine in psychiatry received a special invitation to give the inaugural lecture at the Institute Hostosia of Bioethics at the University of Puerto Rico Feb. 27. Dr. Fins spoke on the minimally conscious state and its ethical implications.

Dr. Joel Friedman, associate professor of clinical surgery (dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery), will be named president of the New York State Dental Association for 2013. The Association is a constituent of the American Dental Association representing more than 13,000 dentists in New York, and dedicates itself to ensuring the highest level of dental care for the people of New York state.

Dr. Alvin I. Mushlin, the Nanette Laitman Distinguished Professor and chairman of the Department of Public Health, has been selected as a member of a new advisory panel the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. Dr. Mushlin will sit as a member of the Advisory Panel on Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment Options. He is one of 21 members chosen from more than 1000 nominees for the four panels. Dr. Mushlin is the first faculty member from Weill Cornell to serve as a member of a standing Institute board or committee. The Institute was established to help guide healthcare reform as part of the affordable care act.

Dr. Genevieve Yuen, a resident in the Department of Psychiatry, received the 2013 American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry Member-in-Training Research Award for best original research. Her award lecture was titled "Neuroanatomical Correlates of Apathy in Late-Life Depression and Antidepressant Treatment Response." The American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry focuses on the challenges of geriatric psychiatry.
