Dr. Costantino Iadecola, director of the Brain and Mind Research Institute, the Anne Parrish Titzell Professor of Neurology, George C. Cotzias Distinguished Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience and professor of neurology and neuroscience, gave the special invited talk at the annual Goldberg Family Lecture in Neurology at the University of Rochester Medical Center on September 21 about "Rescuing troubled vessels in Alzheimer's disease." The lecture is part of the Medical Center's neurology grand rounds.
Dr. David C. Madoff, chief of the Division of Interventional Radiology and professor of radiology, received an award for his book "Venous Embolization of the Liver: Radiologic and Surgical Practice," by the British Medical Association Sept. 13 in London, England, for highly commended citation in the Radiology category.
Dr. Art Sedrakyan, associate professor and director of the Comparative Effectiveness Research Program in the Department of Public Health, was elevated to vice-chair of the Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee July 30. Just two months earlier, Dr. Sedrakyan and Dr. Alvin I. Mushlin, chairman of the Department of Public Health, the Nanette Laitman Distinguished Professor of Public Health and professor of Medicine, were reappointed to additional two-year terms on the Committee, which was established to provide independent guidance and expert advice to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on specific clinical topics. The Committee is used to supplement the Center's internal expertise, allow an unbiased and current deliberation of state-of-the-art technology and science and make recommendations on national coverage of devices and interventions for all Medicare beneficiaries.
Dr. Matthew S. Simon, a resident in general preventive medicine, was nominated as a finalist for the Lee B. Lusted Student Research Prize that was presented at the Society of Medical Decision Making's annual meeting Oct. 19. Dr. Simon presented his research project findings, titled "Cost-Effectiveness of Blood Donor Screening for Babesiosis in Endemic Regions." The Society's mission is to improve health outcomes through the advancement of proactive systematic approaches to clinical decision-making and policy formation in health care by providing a scholarly forum that connects and educates researchers, providers, policy makers, and the public.
Dr. Michael Stewart, vice dean, E. Darracott Vaughn, Jr., M.D. Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology and professor of otolaryngology and public health, received the American Academy of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery's honor award in September. The award recognizes Dr. Stewart's meritorious service to the Academy.
Dr. Harel Weinstein, chairman of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, director of the Institute for Computational Biomedicine, the Maxwell M. Upson Professor of Physiology and Biophysics and a Tri-Institutional professor, gave the keynote lecture at the 19th EuroQSAR conference Aug. 27 in Vienna, Austria, focusing on Knowledge Enabled Ligand Design. The EuroQSAR Symposia have been taking place since 1973 and constitute major scientific events in the field of computational drug design, with further applications in agricultural and environmental sciences.
