Stephen Cohen Named Associate Provost and Executive Vice Dean for Administration and Finance at Weill Medical College of Cornell University

Dr. Antonio M. Gotto Jr.

NEW YORK (February 21, 2006) — A nationally recognized executive in finance and operations, Stephen M. Cohen has been appointed Associate Provost and Executive Vice Dean for Administration and Finance at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He will be the senior executive responsible for the day-to-day management of the non-academic operations of Weill Cornell Medical College, reporting directly to Dr. Antonio M. Gotto Jr., Provost for Medical Affairs of Cornell University and Dean of the Medical College. Mr. Cohen will oversee the operations of the Medical College and assist the Provost and Dean in the development of strategic planning, policies and procedures. His appointment is effective March 13.

Mr. Cohen was most recently the vice president and chief financial officer at Howard Hughes Medical Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Prior to that he was associate dean for finance and administration at the Yale University School of Medicine.

Dr. Gotto noted that Mr. Cohen's appointment comes at a time of unparalleled growth at the Medical College.

"There couldn't be a better time to welcome Steve to our institution," Dr. Gotto says. "With the successful completion of the first phase of our Advancing the Clinical Mission capital campaign, we are well positioned for growth in several exciting new areas that will enhance our tripartite mission of clinical care, research, and education. We are indeed fortunate to have Steve Cohen join us at this time in the Medical College's history."

In his new position, Mr. Cohen will serve as the principal liaison to the financial and administrative offices of Cornell University. He will also serve as administrative liaison to the Medical College's principal clinical affiliate, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

"The strength of our institution is evidenced by the caliber of people who join us in our mission," says Sanford I. Weill, Chairman of Citigroup and Chairman of the Board of Overseers for the Medical College. "Steve Cohen is the right person with the right background to help us meet the challenges ahead."

"I am honored to be selected for this position," says Mr. Cohen. "Weill Cornell Medical College is leading the way in so many areas — from stem cell research and translational medicine, to its regional, national and global collaborations from New York to Texas to Qatar. I welcome the opportunity to participate in the growth of this institution."

As vice president and chief financial officer at Howard Hughes Medical Center, Mr. Cohen led the reorganization of information technology services, oversaw the implementation of a new reporting system, and restructured both internal and external audit functions. He received his B.A. from Penn State and M.B.A. from New York University. He has served on a number of boards of professional organizations in his field, and currently serves on the audit committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Mr. Cohen succeeds Steven P. Rosalie, who has recently been appointed Associate Provost for International Initiatives and Executive Vice Dean for the Medical College. Speaking of this new role, Dr. Gotto says, "I am grateful that Steve Rosalie has agreed to take on this new responsibility. Under his skillful guidance, we can be assured that our international initiatives and commitment to global medicine will continue to thrive."
