H. Dirk Sostman Elected President of Association of University Radiologists

New York, NY (June 2001) — H. Dirk Sostman, M.D., Professor and Chair of Radiology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and Radiologist-in-Chief of New York Weill Cornell Medical Center, has been elected President of the Association of University Radiologists (AUR), a multi-faceted radiological organization whose main focus is the academic side of radiology.

Dr. Sostman, who is also Associate Chief Medical Officer of the Cornell Physician Organization, received his M.D. in 1976 from Yale University School of Medicine. He pursued a medical internship, radiology residency, nuclear medicine residency, and thoracic imaging fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was on the faculty at Yale until 1987, as Associate Professor and Chief of MRI. He was then at Duke University, where he was Professor and Vice Chair of Radiology, until 1995.

Dr. Sostman's memberships include Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (Founding Member), Fleischner Society (Elected 1984), and Society of Thoracic Radiology (Founding Member). Awards and honors include New York's Best Doctors, Best Doctors in America, Stauffer Award, George Simon Memorial Award, Lamport Biomedical Research Award, Dolgan Memorial Award, and Fales Prize. His scientific advisory panels have included the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Study Section of the National Insitutes of Health, the Diagnostic Imaging Special Emphasis Panel (Chair) of the NIH, and the NIH Commission of the Academy of Radiology Research.

He has been principal investigator on several NIH and foundation grants, and is author or co-author of over 100 original papers as well as numerous reviews, chapters, and abstracts. He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally.

In 2002, the AUR will celebrate 50 years of excellence in teaching, research, and patient care. The AUR 50th annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, will include other academic radiology organizations such as the Society of Chairman of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD), the Society for Health Services Research in Radiology, the Association of Program Directors in Radiology (APDR), and the American Association of Academic Chief Residents in Radiology. The AUR also sponsors two specialty alliances, the Radiology Research Alliance (RRA) and the Alliance of Medical Student Educators in Radiology (AMSER).
