Dr. Charbel Abi Khalil, assistant professor of genetic medicine and of medicine, has been elected a Fellow of the American Heart Association. The association recognizes scientific and professional accomplishments as well as volunteer leadership and service. Dr. Abi Khalil also received the Paul Dudley White Scholar Award during the association’s annual meeting, which took place in November 2017.

Dr. Babacar Cisse, assistant professor of neurological surgery, has been selected as the 2018-19 Getch Scholar by the National Institute for Neurological Diseases and Stroke (NINDS) and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). The award was established in 2015 to support the research efforts of promising neurosurgeon-scientists. The award provides a grant of $200,000 over two years to help launch a dual clinical-research career for a young neurosurgeon the NINDS and CNS identify as being an innovator in research and investigation.

Shira Yomtoubian, a doctoral student at Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, this past winter won a Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Pharmacology/Toxicology from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation. The award provides a stipend of $20,000 per year for up to two years. Yomtoubian’s research will be conducted under the supervision of her mentor Dr. Vivek Mittal, and will provide a potential mechanism-based anti-metastatic therapeutic approach for triple negative breast cancer in an effort to develop an effective targeted therapy.
